DWP confirms £1350 in cost of living payments and when you’ll be paid

The government has laid out a payment schedule for when millions will receive cost of living payments in 2023. The first of the payments, which could total up to £1350 depending on individual circumstances, is due in spring, according to gov.uk website.

Cost of living support is designed for those on means-tested benefits who may need extra help due to the rise in food, housing and utility bills. Over 8 million families in the UK on means-tested benefits will automatically receive £301 this spring, and over 6.5 million people on disability benefits will receive a £150 payment in the summer.

The total paid to those in 2023/24 has increased from 2022 when the cost of living payment was first introduced. Over three payment rounds, people who get the support will receive £900 with extra an £150 for those on disability benefits and another £300 for pensioners.

There are several benefits that make claimants eligible for the £301 Cost of Living Payment, including Universal Credit, tax credits, Pension Credit, and legacy DWP benefits such as Jobseekers Allowance and Income Support, totalling 8.1 million households. If you qualify you will receive the payment automatically and do not need to apply.

The government has laid out a payment schedule which is currently still quite vague, however, each instalment has been placed in a broad payment window:

  • £301 – First 2023/24 Cost of Living Payment – during spring 2023
  • £150 – 2023 Disability Payment – during summer 2023
  • £300 – Second 2023/24 Cost of Living Payment – during autumn 2023
  • £300 – 2023 Pensioner Payment – during winter 2023/4
  • £299 – Third 2023/24 Cost of Living Payment – during spring 2024

This new support follows the government’s 2022 support package. Some of the measures from last year are set to continue until later in 2023 including a £400 energy bill discount for all households, which will continue to run through March.
